~~Wildlife NEWS FLASH!~~
01/01/07 I took Sage over to my mentor's for soft release! Bye Sage! He will be released in a few weeks as spring approaches.
02/14/07 Currently, I still have the 4 sisters & the adult hit-by-car male. The sisters will go when the weather gets nicer. The male is still recovering.
04/22/07 I've gotten in 3 baby squirrels. (The one sister died after @ 4 days:( As of 05/23/07, the other 2 are doing great & getting bigger!! :)
05/19/07 - got a baby goose! What a cutie!
05/28/07 - Well after serious thought (which has been going on the last month) and consideration of the situation. . . I have decided to pre-release my 4 girls right here at home. I didn't initially think of this as an option. However, I have decided to do it. The girls are totally in awe!! In fact, 2 didn't return to the cage & preferred to stay in the trees to sleep! The one being that little stinker with a lot of light coloring - she turned out to be QUITE the feisty!! LOL The other 2 more. . timid - sort of - girls returned to the cage & the area they bed in every night. I hung a box for them outside in case they choose to use it. As awful as it is, I watched them for quite a long time! I took many pictures, which are mostly the 2 girls that returned to the cage for bed. These 2 girls stayed close to the door & played around! I was sooooooooo excited & thrilled to see them bury foods, dig, tasting grasses & branches. . . oh my! It was like having a child leave for college!! (Which I don't know about yet since my oldest is only 11!) I made a photo album of them too, & you can see the pics I took HERE of their "liberation"! Watching them dig & explore made me feel SOOOOOO good . . . to see them doing things "wild squirrels" do. . . oh my gosh! I had such a feeling . . . I can't even describe! At the same time, I am now scared, worried, sad, upset, . . . heartbroken! LOL I am now worried about what will happen to them. . . Bad things happen to wild squirrels every day. . . and I know that is just a part of their life! I hope they get to be mommas & have a full life before that happens to them!! I felt my place was ok. . . we are a good ways from the road. . . we also have LOTS of trees, brush & a big empty area up behind us. . . so they do have LOTS of room. My girls! Are so grown. . . the 2 were obviously soooooooo ready! LOL The other 2 will I guess take longer, but that's ok!
Mid-July 2007 - I got a call from Tx! I sent the lady rehabber info for TX. I hope she got what she needed because I didn't hear back from her.
August 5th, 2007 - a call from WA state tonight! A lady found a baby squirrel in her yard & apparently came across my site somehow. I was lucky & able to find someone local to her. Due to these recent out of state calls, I have been working on trying to build a list of out-of-state rehabbers for people that may call. If you want to be listed, please let me know!:)
September 2007 - got a baby squirrel! The other 2 little went a few weeks ago to get ready for release at my mentor's. They will spend several weeks (prob released by now!) in an outdoor cage, getting conditioned to the outdoor world. Then, off they will go! The new baby spent almost 3 wks here, then I took her there too, as I had no other young'uns come in to be with her. . . She is a sweetie pie!!
October 2007 - Chuckie is doing so well & has adjusted well to his new home! The weekend of Oct 20th, I will be at a Wildlife Rehabilitator's Conference (fri-sun). I can't wait! I look forward to it every year! I use the conferences to meet others, and of course, cram every class I can! It is important to learn any new information that may have come along, to keep up-to-date, as well as things I didn't know of course - which there is plenty of that!! :}
